About Our Project

'Think You're Normal?' is a project put together by five second year Media Production students at the University of Winchester working under the name 'Divided Productions'.

The Documentary
The topic of the documentary is children and young adults with disabilities; looking at them in the school environment to see whether what society assumes is necessarily true. For instance, can they read? Can they write? Can they interact with others?

The idea of our project is to observe disabled children at school to see how similar it is to the education of children deemed ‘normal’. We will visit St Philips School in Chessington, Surrey to speak to teachers about the topic. We will observe classes of Maths and English to see what techniques are used in order for children with learning disabilities to comprehend the subjects more. We will also look at unconventional subject lessons such as the ‘Life Skills’ and ‘Jump Ahead’ which has been specifically designed for a special unit within the school.

The aim is to show that children with disabilities and learning disabilities are just as normal as those without, showing the comparisons in their education and daily lives.

As the school day comes to close, we’ll be following Sophie, a 16-year-old girl with Down's Syndrome, in order to show she has a normal, happy life just like any child.
